Overview:

The 3rd quarter 2009 edition of AFG Research’s U.S. Market Snapshot Series™ for Composite Materials provides an overview of the US dental composites market. Based on data collected as part of AFG Research’s dental omnibus (OMNIDEN™) from 264 dentists across the US, this report will aid dental manufacturers in identifying their market share / share of procedure and assessing their favorability among US dentists (i.e., dentists’ attitudes towards them).

As restoration materials have evolved through generations to produce reliable, aesthetically-pleasing direct restorations, the market for dental composite materials has similarly expanded. Considering the heightening popularity of cosmetic dentistry, it would be foreseeable that the dental market for composite materials will continue to grow.

“68 percent of respondents in the United States and Canada still use amalgam at least part of the time in their practices”, Clinicians’ Preferences 2005: survey data from 1652 random CRA Newsletter subscribers, CRA Newsletter, 2005, Vol. 29(10).

That being said, there is currently a definite shift towards the use of composite materials in direct fillings.

“Direct composites can be the most conservative choice in materials that we have in dentistry. A dentist working with these materials also has total control over shade, shape, and function. After placing and curing the composite material, if the shade is not acceptable, it is easily removed and altered to satisfy the specific aesthetic demands of the cost … in addition, resin-based composite restorations can be easily repaired” (“Full-Mouth Reconstruction of Bulimic-Ravaged Teeth Using Direct Composites: A Case Presentation”, Dentistry Today, January 2009)

A few key manufacturers are significantly outperforming all their competitors. However, it appears that manufacturers with the largest share of procedure (i.e., the total number of procedures performed with their dental composite material) did not necessarily enjoy the highest manufacturer favorability among dentists in the US market; that is, the number of US dentists who felt “very positive” about them was lower than expected.
