Overview:

The 3rd quarter 2009 edition of AFG Research’s U.S. Market Snapshot Series™ for Dental Adhesives provides an overview of the US dental adhesives market. Based on data collected as part of AFG Research’s dental omnibus (OMNIDEN™) from 264 dentists across the US, this report will aid dental manufacturers in identifying their market share / share of procedure and assessing their favorability among US dentists (i.e., dentists’ attitudes towards them).

As restoration materials have evolved through generations to produce reliable, aesthetically-pleasing direct restorations, the market for dental adhesive materials has similarly expanded. Notably, the adhesives market has yielded a variety of products for dentists to choose from, from three-step and two-step systems to the newer one-step self-etching systems.

  • “Although the three-step etch-and-rinse strategy has been considered the gold standard, the use of the self-etching strategy has increased because the materials used in this strategy are user-friendly. Self-etching systems no longer require separate etching and rinsing steps, which lessens clinical application time and reduces technique sensitivity issues … OSSE systems, however, are composed of high concentrations of hydrophilic resin monomers, ionic resin monomers or both, creating thin coatings that may inhibit oxygen and result in a poorly polymerized adhesive layer.”, Improving clinical retention of one-step self-etching adhesive systems with an additional hydrophobic adhesive layer, JADA, July 2009.
  • “At 12 years, the retention rate of Class V composite restorations bonded by using the three-step adhesive system OptiBond Dual Cure was nearly 90 percent and not affected by dentin acid-etching”, A 12-year clinical evaluation of a three-step dentin adhesive in noncarious cervical lesions, JADA, May 2009.
  • “Although application of multiple adhesive coats significantly improved the retention rates of restorations placed with the acetone-based adhesive (One-Step Plus), none of the tested groups […] experienced retention rates that met the ADA guidelines”, Application of a Dental Adhesive Using the Self-Etch and Etch-and-Rinse Approaches: An 18-month clinical evaluation. JADA, January 2008.

A few key manufacturers are significantly outperforming all their competitors. Notably, it appears that manufacturer favorability differs greatly between the overall US dental market and the “user” segment, in that dentists who actually use adhesives by certain manufacturers report much higher favorability for that manufacturer, compared to dentists who don’t have first-hand experience with them.
