Overview:

The 3rd quarter 2009 U.S. Market Snapshot Series™ for Dental Cements provides an overview of the US dental cements market. Based on data collected as part of AFG Research’s dental omnibus (OMNIDEN™) from 264 dentists across the US, this report will aid dental manufacturers in identifying their market share / share of procedure and assessing their favorability among US dentists (i.e., dentists’ attitudes towards them).

As restoration materials have evolved through generations to produce reliable, aesthetically-pleasing restorations, the market for dental cement materials has similarly expanded. Notably, the adhesives market has yielded a variety of products for dentists to choose from, from multi-step systems to the newer one-step self-etching systems.

  • “Self-etching resin cements are a category gaining popularity as indicated by rising sales over the past year. While there has been some controversy surrounding bond strength and overall efficacy of these cements when compared with more traditional total-etch resin counterparts, remember that no cement can be successful if the preparation is non-retentive … [looking] at a cementation technique using self-etching resin cement…[as to] the clinical success of the case one year following placement …the patient has reported complete overall satisfaction with his case, both from a comfort standpoint (lack of sensitivity) and from an esthetic and functional standpoint”, Results speak for themselves: A one-year follow-up on the “Noah Technique” and how it demonstrates predictable cementation using self-etching resin cements, Dental Products Report, July 2009.

A few key manufacturers are significantly outperforming all their competitors. However, it appears that manufacturers with the largest share of procedure (i.e., the total number of procedures performed with their dental cement material) did not necessarily enjoy the highest manufacturer favorability among dentists in the US market; that is, the number of US dentists who felt “very positive” about them was lower than expected.

Additionally, it seems that manufacturer favorability differs greatly between the overall US dental market and the “user” segment, in that dentists who actually use cements by certain manufacturers report much higher favorability for that manufacturer, compared to dentists who don’t have first-hand experience with them.
