Overview:

The 3rd quarter 2009 edition of AFG Research’s U.S. Market Snapshot Series™ for Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) and Digital Panoramic X-Ray provides an overview of the US CBCT and Digital Panoramic X-Ray markets. Based on data collected as part of AFG Research’s dental omnibus (OMNIDEN™) from 264 dentists across the US, this report will aid dental manufacturers in identifying their market share, awareness, favorability, perceived value for money as well as the equipment usage and purchase intentions among US dentists.

Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) technology enables dentists to achieve more predictable results that traditional X-Rays, limit some medical and legal risks and is becoming according to some specialists a “standard of care”, those elements make the US CBCT market one to watch in the coming years:

  • “We accomplish this [1,000 implant surgeries a year] with an in-office, 3-D scanner that uses the latest advancement in dental imaging: cone beam technology. We could perform these procedures with traditional 2-D imaging, but we wouldn’t achieve such predictable outcomes and diagnostic accuracy”, Profit in 3 dimensions, Dental Economics, August 2007.
  • “First, practice members will become better dentists diagnostically and surgically and reduce medical and legal risks. Second, they will better educate patients and easily communicate conditions and treatment plans. And third, it sets the practice up for the time 3-D imaging is likely to become the standard of care. In fact, simply owning a cone beam 3-D imaging system crafts a perception that a practice is on the cutting edge of technology and patient care – a favorable impression for patients and doctors alike”, Profit in 3 dimensions”, Dental Economics, August 2007.
  • But as the same time, the cost of a CBCT system has to be taken into account, as digital panoramic X-Ray are able, even in a less accurate way, to give a reliable jawbone image:
    - “Dental practitioners can benefit from a digital panoramic/cephalometric system with the efficiency and accuracy of robotic-driven imaging without sacrificing savings. (“Product focus: panoramic digital radiography”, Dentistry Today, June 2008.

A key CBCT manufacturer is significantly outperforming all its competitors in terms of market share; however, this strong leadership is not completely reflected when it comes to favorability and is even challenged when it comes to the manufacturer value for money. In comparison, some key Digital Panoramic X-Ray manufacturers are leading the market in terms of market share and favorability scores, but when it comes to manufacturer value for money, one manufacturer stands out.
